An Outstanding Design Team Put Together the Layout of The Golf Club of Kansas
The design of our course at The Golf Club of Kansas is the result of a unique collaboration between renowned course architect Tom Jackson of South Carolina and Tom Kelly, our project Founder and Managing Partner.
Jackson has been a golf course architect for more than 40 years and is now a member of the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame. His first job in course design was with Robert Trent Jones, a legend in course construction.
Since 1971, he has had his own firm; he now works with his sons Tom III ("Ridg") and Reese. Jackson Golf Inc., based in Greenville, S.C., is responsible for designing 130 courses, including many outstanding layouts in the golfing mecca of Myrtle Beach. His design philosophy is "to match the topography and make it look as natural as possible."
Our Founder, Tom Kelly was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Davenport, Iowa, eventually earning a teaching degree from the University of Northern Iowa where he also played on the golf team.
He discovered the site of our golf club by accident while driving by the property one day with his brother-in-law, Steve Spinelli. During his 25 year career of helping develop and open five previous courses, he and Steve had always talked about doing a course of their own someday. They both took the plunge and took on this project.
Kelly's course construction experience includes work with architects Jim Spear, Tom Jackson (three times in all), Arnold Palmer, and P. B. Dye. He is also experienced as a construction project manager and has dealt with numerous local, state and federal government agencies involving development matters. Tom is a member in good standing of the Professional Golfers Association (10 years as an elected section board member and officer) and the Club Managers Association of America.
